Bears training camp report: Takeaways from the 10th practice, with a day off for the kickers and a visitor from Springfield

Gov. J.B. Pritzker visited Bears camp Tuesday | Patrick Finley/For the Sun-Times

The Sun-Times’ Patrick Finley breaks down the Bears’ Monday practice, the 10th of 2019 training camp:

No kicking, no starters

There was no movement in the Bears’ kicker derby Tuesday — because neither Elliott Fry nor Eddy Pineiro kicked in practice.

Coach Matt Nagy called it “kinda a game-week thing” in preparation for Thursday’s preseason opener. Both kicked Monday.

“The guys in general have dead legs,” Nagy said “Their legs right now, they’ve kicked a lot so let’s get them ready for that preseason game.”

Both will kick Thursday, but the Bears haven’t said who will start.

“But we’re just going to score all touchdowns,” Nagy said, laughing.

The Gov.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker walked onto the Olivet Nazarene University campus toward the end of practice, mingled with fans underneath a VIP awning, and spoke to members of the team afterward.

“He told me he expects 16-0 and a Super Bowl,” Nagy said. “I said, ‘That’s some pretty lofty expectations.’”

This and that

Quarterback Mitch Trubisky was sharper than in recent days, and maybe the best he’s been since camp began. … Tight end Trey Burton missed his fourth-straight practice as he recovers from offseason groin surgery. … Cornerback Prince Amukamara posted two interceptions. The most impressive of the two: catching a pass intended for Adam Shaheen that linebacker Roquan Smith tipped in the air. Nose tackle Eddie Goldman scored after they lateraled the ball to him on the return …. Cornerback Duke Shelley made an impressive interception down the left sideline.

Up next: The Bears have Wednesday off before hosting the Panthers on Thursday night at Soldier Field.
