Bears TE Trey Burton misses second practice with scheduled off day

For the second straight practice, Bears tight end Trey Burton was nowhere to be found on the practice field.

Coming off sports hernia surgery, the Bears are taking necessary precautions to ensure their starting tight end is 100 percent by the regular-season opener on Sept. 5.

Burton had a scheduled off day — his second straight — at Family Fest, where the Bears had a light practice, minus pads, in front of 18,797.

“I felt like we put too much in him right away,” Nagy said after Family Fest, noting that Burton’s last couple of practices had been “a little sluggish,” prompting those scheduled off days.

The Bears have an off day on Sunday before returning to Bourbonnais on Monday for an open practice, which gives Burton an extra day to rest should he need it.

The Bears didn’t do much to address tight end this offseason, putting their faith in-house with Adam Shaheen, Ben Braunecker, Bradley Sowell and the UDFA rookies, including Ian Bunting and Dax Raymond.

Shaheen, who has struggled with staying healthy, missed a couple of practices with a sore lower back, and he’s slowly been working back into practice. Shaheen was a participant in Saturday’s practice.
