Bears TE Trey Burton: ‘I know I’m not playing well’

The Chicago Bears’ offense is bad. As in historically bad, as evidenced by the first half of last week’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

They rank 27th in scoring and 30th in yards per play, but it’s the eye test that is most concerning when watching the Bears offense. After eight games, they still aren’t close to finding their identity, no matter how close Matt Nagy believes they are.

Aside from quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and the play of the offensive line, the most frustrating concern on offense is the tight end production. Or lack thereof.

The role of the “U” tight end in Nagy’s offense is an important one, so it’s not a surprise that with the Bears offense struggling that Trey Burton hasn’t been a factor.

“It’s a focal point in the offense,” Burton said, via NBC Sports Chicago. . “And usually when this type of offense is doing well, the tight end’s doing well.”

Burton had sports hernia surgery in the offseason and injured his groin in August, and he hasn’t been close to 100 percent. Not that Burton is using his injury struggles as an excuse for his poor play.

“I don’t want to make any excuses for my play,” Burton said. “I know I’m not playing well.”

Not playing well is an understatement. In fact, he’s hardly been involved in the offense. He’s averaging two catches for 12 yards in the first eight games.

If the Bears offense is going to get on track, it’s going to need to see production from its tight ends, especially Burton.
