Bears sit 28 players against Colts

INDIANAPOLIS — Bears coach Matt Nagy was true to his word Saturday: He sat out most of his important players, including every starter on both sides of the ball, against the Colts.

There were 28 healthy scratches. On offense, Nagy sat quarterback Mitch Trubisky, running backs Tarik Cohen, Mike Davis and David Montgomery, receivers Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller and Cordarrelle Patterson, tight ends Trey Burton, Adam Shaheen and Ben Braunecker and linemen Charles Leno, Kyle Long, James Daniels, Cody Whitehair and Bobby Massie.

On defense, Nagy held out linemen Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman and Bilal Nichols, outside linebackers Leonard Floyd and Khalil Mack, inside linebackers Danny Trevathan and Roquan Smith, cornerbacks Kyle Fuller, Prince Amukamara and Buster Skrine and safeties Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Eddie Jackson.

Nagy will sit his starters in the preseason finale Thursday, too.

Honoring Chuck

The Colts honored former head coach Chuck Pagano — now the Bears’ defensive coordinator — during a TV timeout in the first quarter. A video tribute showed highlights of Pagano on the field and off, including his return from leukemia.

The scoreboard then showed a live shot of Pagano on the Bears’ sideline. Seemingly touched, Pagano tipped his cap to the crowd.

Pagano coached the Colts for six seasons (2012-17).

This and that

T.J. Clemmings, a candidate for the job as the Bears’ swing offensive tackle, was carted off the sideline after suffering an injury to his right leg late in the first half. He was ruled out for the game.

• ESPN will debut ‘‘A Lifetime of Sundays’’ — a documentary that chronicles the lives of four NFL matriarchs, including the Bears’ Virginia McCaskey — at noon Sunday.
