Bears signing multi-faceted RB Damien Williams

The Bears are adding an intriguing piece to their offense: former Chiefs running back Damien Williams.

Williams agreed to a deal, his agent tweeted, and can help the Bears as a runner and receiver. He had the best season of his career in 2019, when he had 711 yards from scrimmage and seven total touchdowns, before opting out of last season because of concerns about coronavirus.

Williams, who turns 29 next month, was the star of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV win with 17 rushes for 104 yards and a touchdown and four catches for 29 yards and a touchdown.

His arrival likely means the end for Cordarrelle Patterson, 30, after playing a multi-faceted role in the offense the last two seasons. Williams also has experience as a kick returner, but he hasn’t done that regularly since 2015 with the Dolphins.

The Bears likely will still rely on David Montgomery as their primary running back after a breakout season of 1,070 yards rushing and 10 total touchdowns.

While there is some common ground because of their association with Chiefs coach Andy Reid, Williams has never played for Bears coach Matt Nagy. Bears offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, however, held that position when Williams was with the Dolphins in 2014 and ‘15.
