Bears sign TE Bradley Sowell to active roster

The seesaw that is tight end Bradley Sowell’s time between Chicago’s active roster and practice squad continues.

Sowell was elevated to the active roster Tuesday after serving on the Bears’ practice squad. He has been waived twice and signed twice since last Sunday.

Sowell takes the roster spot of DL Abdullah Anderson, who the Bears waived Monday.

This comes as a bit of a surprise mostly because many believed the Bears were making room for QB Tyler Bray on the active roster, given starting QB Mitch Trubisky’s dislocated left shoulder.

Does this mean Trubisky might be good to go Sunday against the Raiders?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Trubisky suffered a dislocated left shoulder and a slight labrum tear that won’t require surgery and that he’d be back “sooner rather than later,” which is certainly encouraging.

Coach Matt Nagy wouldn’t rule out Trubisky playing against the Raiders, but it doesn’t seem likely. Nagy has been cautious about the handling of injuries, not being afraid to rest starters when necessary to heal.

Given the Bears have a bye week after Week 5’s game against Oakland, it would give Trubisky three weeks to rest and prepare for a Week 7 return vs. New Orleans.

We’ll know more about Trubisky’s status later in the week, which should be indicated by whether or not they promote Bray to the 53-man roster.
