Bears sign RB Kerrith Whyte Jr. to practice squad

After being waived by the Bears on Thursday, rookie RB Kerrith Whyte Jr. has been signed to Chicago’s practice squad.

Whyte Jr. was released to make room for offensive-lineman-turned-tight-end Bradley Sowell on the active roster.

The seventh round draft pick out of Florida Atlantic, Whyte Jr. backed up third-round pick RB Devin Singletary, who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills.

In his collegiate career, Whyte Jr. had 232 carries for 1,358 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also had 22 receptions for 227 yards and two touchdowns.

Since joining the Bears, Whyte Jr. impressed with his speed and versatility on offense and special teams. He beat out RB Ryan Nall for a spot on the active roster, but he had been inactive for the first three games this season.

Chicago has a packed running back room, led by rookie David Montgomery, Tarik Cohen and Mike Davis, which has hindered Whyte Jr.’s opportunities.

Luckily, Whyte Jr. made it through waivers, and he’ll get some time to develop on Chicago’s practice squad.
