Bears sign heir to soccer royalty

The Bears signed receiver Jester Weah to a reserve/futures deal. | Alex Brandon/AP

The Bears signed two receivers to reserve/futures deals on Friday: Reggie Davis and Jester Weah.

Davis spent the season on the Bears’ practice squad before being put on injured reserve last month. Weah joins the Bears after brief stints in the Texans and Washington Football Team organizations. The 6-3, 209-pounder played collegiately at Pitt, where he totaled 77 catches for 1,566 yards. He went undrafted in 2018.

The Madison, Wis., soccer native is an heir to soccer royalty. His uncle — his dad’s brother — is George Weah, the former FIFA Player of the Year and Ballon D’Or winner.

Perhaps the greatest Africa-born soccer player of all time, Weah parlayed his popular into a stint at a senator in his native Liberia. In 2018, he became President of Liberia, a role in which he remains.

George’s son, Tim Weah, plays for the U.S. National Team.

NFL teams give reserve contracts to players that didn’t finish the season on their 53-man roster.
