Bears sign former Delaware WR Joe Walker

The Chicago Bears made a minor transaction Saturday, waiving DB Josh Simmons and signing WR Joe Walker to the 90-man training camp roster.

Walker, the former Delaware quarterback-turned-wide receiver, joins a crowded position group with the Bears and is a longshot to make the final roster. His best chance to stick around is likely via the practice squad, but even that will be a challenge.

Walker made the change to wide receiver for the Blue Hens in 2018 and finished the season with 34 catches for 670 yards and four touchdowns. He added 21 carries for 120 yards and one score.

The Bears may have one spot up for grabs at receiver this summer. Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller, Cordarrelle Patterson and Riley Ridley are locks to make the team. Javon Wims looks like a safe bet. Marvin Hall is surging as a potential seventh receiver kept, and undrafted rookie Emmanuel Hall may have the inside track at a practice squad spot. And let’s not forget about Tanner Gentry, either. The fan-favorite is always a wildcard.

Walker will have his opportunity to make his mark in the preseason.
