Bears scouting report: Marcus Peters, Chiefs CB

Oct. 10--Information for this report was obtained from NFL scouts.

The Chiefs drafted 6-foot, 197-pound Marcus Peters 18th overall out of Washington, making him the third cornerback taken, behind Trae Waynes (Vikings, 11th) and Kevin Johnson (Texans, 16th). He intercepted a Brian Hoyer pass on the first play of his NFL career and had a pick-six against Peyton Manning the next week.

There were concerns about Peters' character entering the draft because the Huskies suspended him for one game last fall and then ultimately kicked him off the team.

"Not surprised he's off to a nice start, because ability-wise he was the top cornerback in the draft," a national scout for one NFC club said. "He has really, really good instincts. He has all the measurables too. He has good size and he can run and he has good foot speed. But the thing was he was really instinctive when the ball was in the air. He took great angles and he's really good in man coverage. He wasn't the most physical dude in college as far as tackling goes. Put it this way, he thought he was a cover guy. Guess what? He is.

"The character? It was (an issue that) you really had to evaluate if you wanted to take him where you were going to have to take him. He was difficult to deal with and he wasn't real coachable. He was selfish. There were a lot of things that were red flags, but like most kids, if you get the right people around him they're going to want to toe that line a little more."
