Bears scouting report: Jameis Winston, Buccaneers QB

Dec. 26--Information for this report was obtained from NFL scouts.

Jameis Winston was the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft this year and with two games remaining he ranks among the most productive rookie quarterbacks in NFL history with 3,422 yards and 20 touchdown passes.

He struggled earlier in the season with turnovers, including a four-interception game against the Panthers in Week 4, but the 6-foot-4, 231-pounder has done a better job of protecting the ball since. He's completing 58.4 percent of his passes and has rushed for five touchdowns.

"I don't think he was reading coverages well and he was forcing the ball and trying to make too many plays early on," the scout said. "Defenses were taking advantage of him and rolling safeties and disguising coverages.

"But since about Week 5, he has improved so much. Start with his footwork and his eyes. They're both better. He's making some big-time throws and the thing about him is he's kind of a big moment player just like he was at Florida State. When they need to make a play, he's doing it. He's good when the play breaks down, he's good on his feet and he can put a lot of heat on the ball.

"He has that confidence level where when he does make a mistake, he shakes it off, comes back and then makes one or two big plays. It doesn't get him down. Sometimes rookies make a bad play and then things start spiraling in the wrong direction. He's a guy, if he does make a mistake, he bounces back quickly. That's a very good trait because everyone talks about doing it but not everyone can."
