Bears rookie WR Dazz Newsome has chip on shoulder: ‘I saw a kicker go before me’

It’s no secret that Bears GM Ryan Pace has managed to find some steals in the later rounds of the NFL draft. In fact, you could argue there are several from this year’s class that could fit that bill.

One of those in wide receiver Dazz Newsome, who Chicago drafted in the sixth round with the 221st overall pick. Newsome brings athleticism and speed to the position, and he’s been known to be quite the human highlight reel.

Newsome appeared on 670 The Score’s Parkins & Spiegel Show on Friday, where he talked about everything from his love for Waffle House to what the Bears are getting in him. But he also addressed the massive chip he has on his shoulder following how long it took for him to be drafted.

“I’ve absolutely got a chip on my shoulder,” Newsome told Parkins & Spiegel. “Man, I saw a kicker go before me.”

That kicker, by the way, was  Florida’s Evan McPherson, who the Cincinnati Bengals selected in the fifth round with the 149th overall pick.

So what is Newsome going to do about it?

“I guess everybody going to find out,” he said. “Tune in.”

Newsome will be competing for a coveted roster spot in a receivers room that features Allen Robinson and another player that had a lot of prove as a fifth-round rookie in Darnell Mooney.

If Newsome impresses during training camp, he has a good chance to earn a roster spot over players like Javon Wims and Riley Ridley. And Newsome’s special teams contributions as a kick returner could certainly help.
