Bears' Robbie Gould not bored at Encompass Championship

July 11--When Robbie Gould's sister was planning her 2014 summer wedding, he asked her not to choose the weekend of the Encompass Championship. Naturally, she did.

But nothing stood in the way of the Bears kicker playing in this year's event. He was paired with Jeff Maggert in the pro-am competition, shooting "a couple over" par Friday at North Shore Country Club.

"I got to go swimming in someone's pool on 8," he said of an out-of-bounds tee shot, "but other than that, I hit the ball pretty good. The greens are in unbelievable shape. If you missed a putt, it was on you. I always blame it on the equipment anyway."

Gould also joked about how well Maggert (4 under) and playing partner Fred Couples (also 4 under) hit it.

"It's incredible to watch how well they control the golf ball, their tempo on their wedges, irons, drivers, whatever they hit," he said. "They hit every fairway, every green ... it's boring golf, in my opinion. You've got to hit a few out of the trees to make it fun."

Gould said he's having fun with the Bears new coaching staff and loves that head coach John Fox takes a special interest in special teams.

"He has a little bit of an admiration for the specialists, which is different from most head coaches," he said. "He spent some time with us in our meetings and during practice, just talking and hanging out. He's a class act."
