Bears cut RB Mike Davis with eye on compensatory draft pick, sign Ryan Ball

The Bears will cut little-used running back Mike Davis on Saturday, ending his two-year, $6 million contract halfway through his first season with the team.

They will sign running back Ryan Nall from their practice squad, a source said.

Davis quickly became expendable when rookie David Montgomery showed he was ready for a role as the team’s primary running back.

Davis played 14 percent of the offensive snaps and didn’t get more than 15 plays in a game after the opener. He had 11 carries for 25 yards.

Shortly after the news broke, Davis tweeted, “Appreciate you Chicago.” The Bears have until 3 p.m. to make the move official if they want to add a player to their roster before facing the Lions on Sunday.

By waiving Davis before the Lions game, the Bears improved their chance of getting a compensatory draft pick in the upcoming offseason. It’s a rarity for them, and the process is mysterious, but it is worth a shot given how depleted the Bears’ draft picks are.

After trading two first-rounders for Khalil Mack last season, the team has just two selections in the first five rounds for 2020. Compensatory picks begin in the third.
