Bears re-sign offensive tackle Rashaad Coward

The Bears continue to promote from within bringing back another familiar face for the 2019 season.

The team has re-signed offensive lineman Rashaad Coward, an Exclusive Rights free agent, the Bears announced on Friday.

Coward signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of Old Dominion in 2017. He played defensive line that season before switching to offensive line in 2018 to provide more depth. Although Coward didn’t play in any games last season, the Bears found him a valuable asset and kept him on the 53-man roster throughout the entire season.

“Vic Fangio pointed out when I first got here that we’ve got a young guy [Coward] who really has some good traits about him as a football player,” offensive line coach Harry Hiestand said last offseason. “He’s tough. He works his tail off. He’s learning on the job really well right now. Very positive growth.”

Coward enters his third season with the Bears and joins the likes of Bradley Sowell, Ted Larsen, Cornelius Lucas, Willie Beavers and Dejon Allen battling to earn a roster spot as a reserve on the offensive line.

He saw plenty of snaps as the second-team right tackle during preseason last year and should get playing time there, or even at guard, in 2019.
