Bears fans are downright on edge as the team considers pursuing a quarterback via trade. So they couldn’t be blamed for a 23-minute freakout Wednesday that encapsulates how silly social media and offseason rumors can prove to be.

At 3:44 p.m., David Montgomery, who ran for 1,070 yards in his second season with the Bears last year, wrote the following tweet: “Playing in Chicago has been fun and I met some great people along the way !!”

Fans wondered what it meant. Was he being traded?

Twenty-three minutes later, he clarified, realizing he had set off a Tweet-storm. He deleted the original tweet and sent a new post.

“Y’all took that completely wrong!” he wrote. “It was not intended in the purpose of football! HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BALL! I love Chicago and I’m ready to be here for a long time and win a lot of games.”

He capped it off with an emoji of a man smacking his forehead.

The Bears are exploring the trade market for veteran quarterbacks. The Eagles are looking to trade Carson Wentz after the former No. 2 overall pick posted the worst season of any regular starter in 2020. Some speculated Wentz would be traded this week. Two league sources said over the weekend, though, that the attention given a potential Wentz trade during Super Bowl week reeked of the Eagles trying to further develop a market for him.
