Bears RB coach says David Montgomery possesses ‘pretty rare contact balance’

David Montgomery is a special player.

Not only is Montgomery one of those high-character guys that makes everyone around him better, but it’s his ability on the field to break tackles and make plays out of nothing that has truly impressed.

Bears running backs coach Charles London said that Montgomery has “pretty rare contact balance,” which projects well at the pro level.

“He definitely possesses that,” London said, via The Athletic. “It’s important from the running back position because every play is not going to be clean and every hole is not going to be clean. Sometimes you just got to create that on your own. He did quite a bit of that at Iowa State. That was something that we noticed. And that is something you really can’t coach. You either kind of got it or you don’t and he does. It’s something we quickly noticed about him.”

Jordan Howard wasn’t the answer at running back for a Matt Nagy offense where the back is expected to be a dual-threat as a runner and receiver.

So during the draft process, Montgomery was someone that stuck out to the Bears right away.

“Going through the draft process, David, he just popped off the film to you,” London said. “Obviously, he broke a lot of tackles. You could tell he ran with a passion. He caught a lot of balls. There was just something about him there that we really liked.”

Montgomery has already impressed during the offseason program with his versatility as a runner and receiver.

While the Bears have a three-headed monster at running back with Montgomery, Tarik Cohen and Mike Davis, Montgomery looks to get a bulk of those carries when the season begins.
