Bears rank in middle of pack among team-QB marriages

Mitchell Trubisky was selected by the Chicago Bears with the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft with the expectation he’d not only become the team’s starting quarterback, but arguably the most important player on the team for the next decade.

After two seasons on the job, there’s little reason to doubt he’ll meet those expectations. He had an improved second season under first-year head coach Matt Nagy, and with a full offseason of work with the playbook and his receivers, he should have an even better season in 2019.

But how committed are the Bears to Trubisky? According to ESPN’s recent ranking of the league’s team-quarterback marriages, Chicago’s relationship with Trubisky ranks only in the middle of the pack.

14. Chicago Bears

The 2019 season is important for Trubisky, as a year from now the Bears will be deciding whether to exercise that 2021 option or begin looking elsewhere for their quarterback of the future. A second season with Matt Nagy as his coach should be helpful to Trubisky’s development, but if he flops, Chicago isn’t committed beyond 2020.

Teams listed ahead of the Bears include the Bills (Josh Allen), Jets (Sam Darnold), Lions (Matthew Stafford), and the Jaguars (Nick Foles).

An argument can be made that the dynamic between Chicago and Trubisky is more important than all of them.

Trubisky started 14 games last season and completed 289 of 434 passes for 3,223 yards, 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His nearly 67% completion percentage was a huge jump from the 59% completion rate he had as a rookie.
