Bears QB Mitch Trubisky struggles in first half vs. Lions

DETROIT — The Bears didn’t fix their quarterback problem.

Mitch Trubisky struggled in the first half of the team’s opener against the Lions on Sunday, completing 8-of-20 passes for 110 yards. While Trubisky did not take a sack or throw a first-half interception, the Bears failed to convert a single third down on six tries. He threw an incomplete pass on fourth down, too. And he fell short on a third-and-1 sneak.

While the Bears’ run game has been unusually strong — they ran 18 times for 90 yards — they’ve gotten little production through the air. Tight end Jimmy Graham and wide receiver Anthony Miller have a combined zero catches on six targets.

The Bears trail 13-6 at halftime.

The two sides seemed destined to be tied at the half when the Bears took over possession at their own 11 with 1:05 to play in the second quarter. Rather than run the ball and dare the Lions to use their three timeouts, the Bears threw a swing pass to running back Tarik Cohen, who ran out of bounds, on first down. Trubisky threw incompletions on the next two plays, and the Bears gave the Lions the ball back — without them having to use a single timeout — with 40 seconds to play.

Fans were non-plussed. One of the topics trending on Twitter in Chicago at halftime: Nick Foles, Trubisky’s backup.
