Bears place RB Tarik Cohen on PUP list ahead of training camp

The Chicago Bears will be without one of their dynamic playmakers on offense when they kick off training camp this week.

Running back Tarik Cohen, who suffered a torn ACL in Week 3 last year, will start training camp on the PUP list as he continues to rehab his knee injury, according to Field Yates.

Cohen signed a three-year contract extension with the Bears early last year before tearing his ACL returning a punt against the Atlanta Falcons. Cohen’s injury shined a light on Chicago’s running back depth issues, which was noticeable last year.

This offseason, the Bears added much-needed depth at running back with veteran Damien Williams, who is well-versed in Matt Nagy’s offense, and drafted rookie Khalil Herbert, who is expected to serve a valuable role returning kickoffs for the Bears. Last season at Virginia Tech, Herbert returned 16 kicks for 430 yards, an average of 26.9 yards per return.

Cohen was present during the offseason program, where he was on the field during stretching and worked on his own. Cohen did experience “a little stiffness” during minicamp, which Nagy wasn’t concerned about.

While the Bears would love to have Cohen on the field as they begin training camp, the depth at running back with Williams and Herbert will allow Cohen to fully recover before returning to the field.
