Bears' Pernell McPhee to start season on PUP list after knee surgery

Chicago Bears outside linebacker Pernell McPhee is one of three players who will begin training camp Thursday on the physically unable to perform list, general manager Ryan Pace said.

The Bears will ease McPhee back into football after he had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in the winter and missed all of the offseason program.

General manager Ryan Pace indicated McPhee might not play in any exhibition games as he gets his acclimated to game condition.

"It's too early to tell," Pace said. "We've got to see how he is as we're kind of going through these activities out here."

McPhee had six sacks last season but only one after Week 8 as left knee pain slowed him.

McPhee played at more than 280 pounds last season, and Pace said Thursday the Bears believe a playing weight in the upper 270s would be beneficial.

"I just think the lighter you are, the less pressure on your knees," Pace said. "So for him playing at a lighter weight is going to be better. ... He's always going to be strong. He's just got to keep his weight down a little bit."

Receiver Marquess Wilson (broken left foot) and offensive lineman Amini Silatolu (knee) will join McPhee on the PUP list. The Bears could activate them at any time, although Wilson could miss regular-season games.
