Those hoping the cap-strapped Bears would find a way to add a significant offensive player — and a local kid at that — were disappointed Saturday when the best receiver on the market, Kenny Golladay, signed with the Giants.
He agreed to a four-year, $72 million deal, with $40 million in guarantees, per NFL Network.
The St. Rita and NIU alum met with Bears coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace on Wednesday night before flying to New York to meet with the Giants on Friday.
Not coincidentally, Bears receiver Allen Robinson signed his franchise tender late Thursday. Golladay’s signing could cost the Bears down the line, too — Robinson will ask for more than the former Lions standout received in a long-term deal.
Fittingly, Robinson congratulated Golladay on Twitter.
Pairing Golladay with Allen Robinson — who, perhaps not coincidentally signed his franchise tag tender on Thursday — would have given the Bears their best receiving duo since Alshon Jeffery teamed with Brandon Marshall.
Instead, the Bears will move on with the dual tasks of trimming payroll to get under the cap while somehow trying to improve their offense.
