Tight end Trey Burton didn’t practice during the Bears’ offseason program after having sports hernia surgery. But head coach Matt Nagy is optimistic he’ll be ready when training camp begins in late July.
“From where we’re at right now, we feel really good that he’s gonna be able to do that,” Nagy said. “Now I don’t want to make a 100 percent prediction that that’s gonna happen. But I feel good about it. I think he does.”
Burton will spend the Bears’ summer break rehabbing in the Chicago area. Nagy said he attended every single voluntary activity this offseason, though he couldn’t participate.
“Even though he hasn’t been on the field doing anything, he’s here mentally,” Nagy said. “And he’s gonna be, hopefully, ready.”
Nagy said the Bears are similarly optimistic that receivers Anthony Miller, who had left shoulder surgery in January, and Emmanuel Hall, who had May sports hernia surgery, will be ready for the start of camp.
Position switch ‘great’
James Daniel will enter training camp as the starting center, as the Bears believe his move from left guard has gone well. Cody Whitehair, their starting center the past three years, switched positions with him this offseason/
“James being at center has been great,” Nagy said. “Cody being at guard has been great.”

• Receiver Allen Robinson returned to practice after missing Wednesday’s for an excused, personal reason. Robinson said everything was fine.
• Tackle-turned tight end Bradley Sowell will try to lose weight before camp starts. Sowell is listed at 312 pounds, though Nagy doubts he was ever that heavy.
