Bears kickers Eddy Pineiro and Elliott Fry remain ‘even’ after Tuesday’s misses during practice

The Bears’ two kickers did little to distinguish themselves — or separate themselves from each other — on the first practice back at Halas Hall.

Eddy Pineiro missed two of his eight attempts on the backfields Tuesday. So did Elliott Fry.

Head coach Matt Nagy continued his public stance that neither is in the lead for a starting job — “They have been even,” he said — and that preseason games will carry more importance than practice.

Pineiro has made 53-of-64 kicks during preseason practices and 1-of-2 tries in last week’s exhibition game. Fry is 54-for-67 during practices and went 1-for-1 in Thursday’s game against the Panthers.

“It’s rare that kickers make every single kick that they take,” Nagy said. “But there’s a balance to that and you have to understand that the preseason is going to be time for us to really evaluate those kicks, and weight them.”

The Bears figure to rotate the two kickers in the next preseason game Friday night against the Giants at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
