Bears kicker competition remains even after Day 5 of training camp

Without the added pressure of a crowd of Bears fans, the kicker competition continued Tuesday in Bourbonnais as Eddy Pineiro got his second turn at it.

On Monday, Elliott Fry connected on 8-of-10 attempts in the wet and windy elements.

During a closed practice, Pineiro kept pace with Fry, recording two misses on the day. He finished 6-of-8.

“They all matter,” coach Matt Nagy told reporters of the kicks Tuesday.

Overall, the kicker competition is more encouraging than it had been at any point this offseason.

That’s not to say that either Fry or Pineiro is a lock for a roster spot. But if either of them can continue to be consistent in training camp and during preseason games, that should be enough to earn the confidence of Nagy and Ryan Pace, as well as a roster spot.

Fry and Pineiro have remained even throughout the first few practices, which is similar to how things have gone during the offseason.

Both have missed three kicks in their two days kicking, with Fry hitting 17-of-20 and Pineiro 15-of-18.

The Bears have an off day today before the kicking competition resumes on Thursday when Fry gets his third go-round.
