Of all the ways the Bears botched the end of their 17-16 loss to the Chargers on Sunday, one of their most egregious errors was a simple one to avoid.
When they lined up to take a knee on the second-to-last play, Mitch Trubisky did so on the left hashmark. But kicker Eddy Pineiro would’ve preferred it centered.
Pineiro made no excuses Tuesday, but when pressed on the spot of his 41-yard kick, it came out that he didn’t ask for it to be from the left side.
“No, I didn’t,” he said. “But it is what it is.”
Considering his kick went wide left and he said he should’ve aimed more to the right, it’s believable that this isn’t revisionist history on his part.
Pineiro was reluctant to rehash the play, but seemed to indicate a straight-on attempt would have been ideal.
“I guess,” he said. “I don’t know.”
Afterward, Pineiro backtracked and said he was good with kicking from the left hashmark.
