Bears in strong salary cap position after 1st wave of free agency

The Chicago Bears didn’t break the bank on any big-name free agents in the first wave of the 2019 free agency signing period, in part because they didn’t have the salary cap space to do so.

But after restructuring Khalil Mack’s contract (a move that freed up $11 million in cap space) and taking a conservative approach to free agency, GM Ryan Pace has restored the Bears’ ability to be players in this next tier of player signings.

Chicago now ranks 16th in cap space at $16,715,716. Their still a far cry from the Colts, who have an astonishing $74 million in cap space available. It’s unclear if the numbers shared by Field Yates take into account Justin Houston’s contract with Indianapolis, but even if they don’t, the Colts will still be tops in the league by a wide margin.

The Bears appear content adding mid-level players to the roster this offseason. They’ll likely turn their attention to extending contracts for key starters like Cody Whitehair and Eddie Jackson with the extra spending money available under the cap.
