Bears expected to release tight end Dion Sims

To no one’s surprise, the Chicago Bears are planning to make a change at the tight end position.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport says the team is expected to release Dion Sims.

He was set to earn just over $6 million in 2019, and the only dead money the Bears will have to pay him after his release is roughly $333,000 left over from his signing bonus.

This roster move will potentially double the Bears salary cap room for 2019 based on some projections, which had Chicago with around $6 million in space before the move.

Sims played only eight games in 2018 before the team put him on injured reserve due to a concussion.

He goes down as another failed free agent signing from Ryan Pace’s 2017 offseason, with only 17 catches for 189 yards in two seasons.

His release clears up more playing time for Adam Shaheen, but it leaves the Bears thin at tight end with Daniel Brown, Ben Braunecker and Zach Miller all set to be free agents as well.
