Bears exercise fifth-year option on Leonard Floyd

During the Bears’ 2018 end-of-year press conference, general manager Ryan Pace was asked questions surrounding Leonard Floyd and whether the team would pick up his 2020 option. Pace indicated that was their plan, and today, that’s exactly what the Bears did. They have officially picked up Floyd’s 2020 option, ensuring the outside linebacker would remain with the team for the next two seasons.

Floyd’s salary will skyrocket from approximately $2.6 million to $13 million in 2020, which likely will significantly impact the salary cap going into his final season.

Floyd was selected by the Bears with the ninth overall pick in 2016 out of the University of Georgia. Through three seasons, Floyd has 114 tackles, 15.5 sacks, two safeties and one interception. Last season was the first where Floyd played a full year, even as he dealt with a broken hand in September.

He missed a total of eight games during his first two seasons due to injury. While his sack numbers are not overly impressive, Floyd has proven to be a stout run defender and has the ability to drop back into coverage when needed.
