Preliminary evaluations of outside linebacker Leonard Floyd encouraged the Bears late Sunday afternoon after the rookie suffered a serious neck injury in Sunday's game against the Giants and left the field on a stretcher and was taken to a hospital.
Floyd is able to move, coach John Fox confirmed after the Bears' 22-16 loss to the New York Giants. Fox provided few details, and the Bears did not say whether Floyd will remain in the hospital overnight.
Floyd dove head first into defensive end Akiem Hicks while trying to make a tackle in the fourth quarter. When the crown of Floyd's helmet hit Hicks, his head and neck compressed. He fell to his hands and knees before trainers eased him to the ground. He stayed down for about eight minutes.
A group of medical personnel stabilized Floyd's head and neck, turned him over and put him on a backboard. Bears players emptied off the sideline to wish him well as the cart drove away.
"I just touched him on his leg and walked back off," outside linebacker Pernell McPhee said. "All prayers go out to Leonard."
Floyd was undergoing tests at the hospital late Sunday afternoon while the team dressed and began its trip back to Chicago.
