Bears don’t believe David Montgomery tore his ACL, will undergo further testing

Bears running back David Montgomery has been the best running back in the NFC this season, and he proved as much through the first four weeks of the 2021 season.

But when Montgomery went down following a run in the fourth quarter, where he was seen writhing in pain, Soldier Field went dead silent. Montgomery, the offense’s most valuable player this season, was believed to have suffered a brutal injury. It didn’t help that the announcers refused to show the replay because it was graphic.

The good news is that it sounds like Montgomery’s injury could’ve been much worse. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bears don’t believe Montgomery tore his ACL. But Montgomery will undergo further testing Monday to determine the extent of his injury.

Schefter’s report lines up with what NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday night, that Montgomery was believed to have avoided a major knee injury.

Montgomery recorded his second 100-yard rushing game of the season, where he totaled 106 yards on 23 carries and two rushing touchdowns. Montgomery was the fifth-leading rusher heading into Week 4.

If Montgomery has indeed avoided a major knee injury, the Bears have the depth at running back to go without him for a few weeks. Not that it’s going to be easy — he’s been their best offensive player this season — but that’s why they brought in Damien Williams and rookie Khalil Herbert.

Williams did suffer a quad injury in the win, but his absence shouldn’t be significant.
