Bears defense shines with 4 interceptions in 15-6 win over Rams

CHICAGO _ The Bears defense shut down the Rams like no other team could this season Sunday night at Soldier Field to pull off a 15-6 upset in front of a national audience.

The Rams entered the game averaging 34.9 points per game, had scored under 30 points just twice all season and hadn't scored fewer than 23 points in a single game.

But the Bears repeatedly stuffed running back Todd Gurley, holding him to a season-low 28 rushing yards, and intercepted quarterback Jared Goff four times to hand the Rams just their second loss this season.

The defense's big showing on a freezing night in Chicago made up for a shaky performance from quarterback Mitch Trubisky in his return from a two-game absence because of a right shoulder injury. Trubisky threw three interceptions but had a third-quarter touchdown pass that gave the Bears a two-score lead.

It is the second straight prime-time game the Bears defense has shined. They shut down the Vikings in a 25-20 victory on Nov. 18. Roquan Smith, Eddie Jackson, Kyle Fuller and Prince Amukamara came up with the interceptions against Goff, with Amukamara's essentially sealing the game on the Rams' final drive.

The Bears had a chance to extend a 15-6 lead with 2:45 to play, but kicker Cody Parkey missed a 38-yard field goal wide left.

The Bears pulled ahead of the Rams 15-6 early in the third quarter thanks to a big defensive play and the only touchdown pass of the game.

They started the quarter off well when Bears nose tackle Eddie Goldman sacked quarterback Jared Goff in the end zone for a safety and an 8-6 lead.

On the Bears' ensuing drive, Trubisky found offensive lineman Bradley Sowell for a 2-yard touchdown pass and a 15-6 Bears lead.

The Bears brought in four defensive players on the play in which they recorded a touchdown, including lineman Akiem Hicks, who scored a touchdown against the Giants last week. But Trubisky faked a handoff to Hicks and found Sowell in the end zone.
