Bears cut kicker competition down to two, waiving Chris Blewitt

The Bears kicker competition took another turn this offseason, as the team announced Wednesday morning they waived Chris Blewitt following a minicamp practice that saw each kicker on the roster miss a 42-yard field goal in consecutive fashion.

The University of Pittsburgh product was signed in early March after the team held a group tryout at Halas Hall.

Blewitt participated in their rookie camp following the draft and was one of three kickers to emerge from the eight-man competition and last through team organized activities and minicamp.

Blewitt’s release leaves recently acquired former Oakland Raiders kicker Eddy Pineiro and former Alliance of American Footbal kicker Elliott Fry as the only two left in the competition.

The team may still explore other options at the position. Former Atlanta Falcons kicker Matt Bryant remains a free agent, and San Francisco 49ers kicker Robbie Gould continues his holdout and request for a trade.
