Bears coaches will meet tonight to determine what to do at QB moving forward

The Chicago Bears are undefeated through three weeks of the 2020 season following another improbable fourth-quarter comeback, this time against the Atlanta Falcons to win 30-26.

But while the end result was favorable, it was another ugly win that featured a ton of inconsistency earlier in the game, particularly on offense.

It got to the point where Bears head coach Matt Nagy decided to bench starter Mitchell Trubisky for back-up Nick Foles midway through the third quarter. And it’s a move that paid off, as Foles led the Bears offense to 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to rally his team to their third win this season.

Following Foles’ success, it seems like it would be a no-brainer to stay with Foles as the starter next week against the Indianapolis Colts, but it’s not as cut and dry.

Nagy said that when they return to Chicago, he’ll have a meeting with the offensive coaches to determine what to do at quarterback moving forward, whether it’s Foles or Trubisky under center. Obviously the decision needs to be made quickly as they’ll start preparing for the Indianapolis Colts next week.

“We’ve just got to make a good decision,” Nagy said, saying  “you have to take emotion out of [it].”

Nagy said that he doesn’t want to get into a habit of going back and forth between the two quarterbacks, even if it did work on Sunday against the Falcons. So, barring a meltdown, the quarterback that wins the job will be the guy moving forward.

“If it’s Mitch, you roll,” Nagy said. “If it’s Nick, you roll. I don’t want it to be back and forth.”

While Nagy indicates that a decision hasn’t been made yet, listening to him talk in his postgame presser, it’s clear that he feels comfortable with Foles leading this team moving forward.

When a decision is ultimately made, it’ll be a surprise if it’s not Foles the Bears decide to roll with.
