Matt Nagy probably hoped the media would let go of its fixation on why one of his best players was an unexplained late scratch Sunday before the Bears-Vikings game.
It didn’t.
Nagy was peppered with questions Monday in search of clarity on why linebacker Roquan Smith was inactive Sunday, a move announced less than two hours before kickoff.
Despite being asked 12 times, he gave no clarity on whether Smith will travel with the team to London on Thursday for the upcoming game against the Raiders, whether he is facing discipline from the team or the law and whether the decision on returning is Smith’s or Nagy’s.
“Again, he’s completely a personal issue,” Nagy said. “For us, it’s something that we’re gonna leave it at that right now.”
He returned to the “personal issue” several times.
When asked if he is worried that his non-answers will only make the story bigger, Nagy said no.
“That’s all part of your guys’ world and what people do,” he said. “Totally normal, that everything, with whatever the situation is, today’s social media and all that stuff, people can say different things. People want to be the first to do this or do that. But, I’m not concerned, no.”
Smith, 22, practiced all last week and was on the sideline in sweats during the game. He was the No. 8 pick last year and had not missed a game until Sunday. He is third on the team in tackles.
