Bears coach Matt Nagy critical of K Cody Parkey’s ‘Today’ show appearance

Matt Nagy likes to talk about “we” vs. “me”  — selfish interests being weighed against those of the team.

Cody Parkey’s appearance on NBC’s “Today” show fell into the latter category, the Bears head coach said Monday.

“For me, you understand that we always talk about a ‘we’ and not a ‘me’ thing, and we always talk as a team — we win as a team, we lose as a team,” Nagy said. “You know, I just, I didn’t necessarily think that that was too much of a ‘we’ thing.”
Was it appropriate?
“Again,” Nagy said, “I didn’t think it was a ‘we’ thing.”

Nagy said Monday that Parkey didn’t tell him about the morning show appearance during the kicker’s exit interview last week.

General manager Ryan Pace, meanwhile, sounded as though a change would be likely.

“That position is an emphasis for us,” he said. “We understand we need to get better, get more production out of that position. Matt talks about it all the time: There’s so much parity in our league, so many close games, the kicker position is critical. We know we need to get better there and it’ll be an area of focus.”

Asked whether Parkey will be a Bear, Pace was non-committal.

“Those are things that need to play out as we go into it,” he said.

Parkey hit the left upright and then the crossbar on a 43-yard attempt that would have beaten the Eagles in the NFC wild card round. Replay showed the ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage.

“The end result was, we didn’t make it,” Nagy said.
