Bears claim tight end J.P. Holtz off waivers from Washington

The Chicago Bears addressed the issue of tight end depth on Wednesday with the addition of J.P. Holtz, who was released by the Washington Redskins this week.

The Bears waived defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson in his place.

Holtz played in his first NFL game on Sunday after being promoted from Washington’s practice squad to active roster in place of the injured Jordan Reed.

Holtz didn’t see any offensive snaps, playing only 14 special teams snaps.

While Trey Burton practiced on Wednesday in a limited capacity, his status is yet to be determined for Week 2. It appears the Bears added Holtz as insurance in the case Burton can’t go on Sunday.

“We’ll just see how he goes, how he is,” Nagy said Wednesday. “I mean, in Trey’s case, just so as we go here, I cannot be any more honest or forthcoming on Trey Burton. I mean it. I’m telling you. Everything I’ve got, I’m telling you. We’re going to see how he does. If he does good, let’s see how he does the next day. And then if we get to it and we feel like he’s good to go, we all collaborate on it, let’s go. If we don’t, then we’re not.”

If Burton can’t go on Sunday, Holtz could see his first offensive snaps in the NFL against the Broncos.
