Bears, Cardinals seek to interview DeFilippo

PHILADELPHI The Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals put in formal requests with the Philadelphia Eagles to interview quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo for their head coaching vacancies, an NFL source said Monday.

ESPN was first to report the requests.

The Bears fired John Fox and former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians announced his retirement on Monday.

DeFilippo has been with the Eagles the last two years and has been partly credited with quarterback Carson Wentz's two-year maturation. Wentz, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last month, was voted to his first Pro Bowl this season.

NFL teams don't typically hire position coaches for head coaching spots, but DeFilippo was an offensive coordinator for a season with the Browns and had interviewed for the 49ers' top job two years ago.

The 39-year-old DeFilippo, a product of Radnor High, will interview sometime this week _ the window for playoff teams with first-round byes.

The Eagles could have other assistants up for head coaching openings. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is reportedly a candidate for the New York Giants job, but they have yet to put in a request to interview the former Lions head coach.

Offensive coordinator Frank Reich is also a possible interview contender.
