Dec. 27--Bears on offense
IN THE AIR
NFL ranks: Bears offense 21st, Buccaneers defense 19th
It has been clear in recent weeks just how depleted the Bears receiving corps is. With Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) on the sideline for most of the second half last Sunday, quarterback Jay Cutler had few options downfield. Receivers aren't creating separation and there's no deep threat. The Buccaneers, however, have started seven combinations of defensive backs in search of consistency. Former Bears safety Chris Conte (two interceptions) now roams the Buccaneers' secondary. Defensive end Jacquies Smith (7 sacks) is a speed rusher with explosive hands.

The Bears' offensive strength is also where the Bucs defense shines. The Buccaneers rank second in the NFL in yards per carry (3.34), and their line's collective length and burst off the ball is problematic. Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has an elite first step. Linebacker Lavonte David is adept at diagnosing plays and finishing. "He can really jack some stuff up in your offensive game plan," right tackle Kyle Long said. Bears running back Matt Forte averaged 5.9 yards on eight carries last Sunday.

The Bucs have their quarterback of the future in rookie of the year candidate Jameis Winston. He sees defenses better than he did early in the year and stretches the field with his strong arm. He has a good feel for the pass rush and is mobile enough to extend plays. Running back Charles Sims (39 receptions, 415 yards) has good hands.

The Buccaneers' 4.86 yards-per-carry average is second in the NFL. As Winston develops, the Bucs rely heavily on running back Doug Martin. "He's rugged," Bears coach John Fox said. "He's thick. He's got good power ... good explosion through the hole, and you know he can take you to the house as far as top-end speed." The Bucs' line features two rookies -- athletic left tackle Donovan Smith and strong right guard Ali Marpet. Bears rookie inside linebacker John Timu was instinctive last week in his first defensive playing time.
