Bears bring in four linemen for tryout

Sept. 29--With defensive tackle Will Sutton's expected to miss a short period of time following a left biceps injury in Sunday's loss at Seattle, the Chicago Bears brought in four linemen for a tryout on Tuesday.

According to an NFL source, veterans DeAngelo Tyson, Cliff Matthews, D'Anthony Smith and Greg Scruggs were worked out. The Bears also put running back George Atkinson III, a former Notre Dame player, through a workout.

None of the defensive linemen were signed and a roster move has not been made with Sutton, and that likely means his injury isn't long-term. Coach John Fox did not provide an update on Monday. But one source indicated Sutton is not expected to miss extended action and that is good news as he adjusted nicely to the 3-4 scheme.

Here is a thumbnail sketch on these players:

DeAngelo Tyson

6-foot-2, 315 pounds

Originally a seventh-round pick by the Ravens in 2012, Tyson appeared in 34 games for Baltimore with six starts. He had 19 tackles and three sacks.

Cliff Matthews

6-foot-4, 268 pounds

A seventh-round pick by the Falcons in 2011, he was part of Atlanta's final cuts this summer. Matthews played in 32 games for the Falcons over four seasons and made 20 tackles.

D'Anthony Smith

6-foot-2, 300 pounds

A third-round pick by the Jaguars in 2010, Smith appeared in only 10 games combined for Jacksonville and the Seattle Seahawks. He also spent time with the Detroit Lions.

Greg Scruggs

6-foot-3, 310 pounds

A seventh-round pick by the Seahawks in 2012, he was waived by the team in final cuts this summer. Scruggs appeared in 14 games over the last three seasons and was credited with two sacks.

George Atkinson III

6-foot-1, 220 pounds

The son of former Raiders safety George Atkinson II, he signed with Oakland as an undrafted free agent last year. Atkinson III appeared in five games for the Raiders and returned kickoffs and contributed on the special teams coverage units, making one tackle.

The Bears did make moves with the 53-man roster. The club waived safety Brock Vereen, a fourth-round pick last year, and signed safety Chris Prosinski and linebacker LaRoy Reynolds. Both are experienced special teams players. Prosinki has played for the Jaguars and Eagles and Reynolds is from the Jaguars.
