DENVER — A wild game for the Bears got even wilder in the final minutes, and they survived for a 16-14 win over the Broncos on Eddy Pineiro’s 53-yard field goal as time expired.
The Broncos had taken a 14-13 lead on a two-point conversion with 31 seconds left after the Bears blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter.
The Bears went up 13-3 lead late in the third after Cordarrelle Patterson went 46 yards up the left sideline for the team’s longest play of the season. From there, the Bears chipped their way to the end zone and scored when David Montgomery stuck the nose of the ball into the goal line on a dive to put them up 13-3 with 1:14 left in the third quarter.
They withstood the Broncos’ counterpunch of a field goal on the next drive and wrapped up the win when Kyle Fuller ended the potential game-tying push with an interception at the Bears’ 3-yard line.
They could only escape so many times, though. The Broncos went 62 yards in the final minutes before Joe Flacco hit Emmanuel Sanders for a touchdown pass, and Vic Fangio opted go for two points and the win. After a wild sequence of penalties, Flacco found Sanders again to take the lead.
