Bears announce hiring of assistant coaches

Jan. 21--Mobile, Ala. -- The Chicago Bears continued to make changes to their coaching staff Tuesday. Hours after announcing the hiring of Vic Fangio, the Bears also finalized deals with three new assistant coaches: offensive line coach Dave Magazu, assistant defensive backs coach Sam Garnes and assistant special teams coach Derion Swinton II.

The Bears also formally announced that five of the assistants from Marc Trestman's coaching staff will not return to work with new head coach John Fox. Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, special teams coordinator Joe Decamillis, tight ends coach Andy Bischoff, linebackers coach Reggie Herring and assistant special teams coach Dwayne Stukes were all informed by the club that they will not return.

Magazu will come to the Bears after spending his past four seasons as offensive line coach with Fox and the Denver Broncos. In each of the past two seasons, the Broncos allowed the fewest sacks in the league -- 17 in 2014 and 20 in 2013. During Magazu's time in Denver, three Broncos offensive linemen reached the Pro Bowl: Ryan Clady (2011,2012, 2014), Zane Beadles (2012) and Louis Vasquez (2013). Magazu spent eight seasons with Fox in Carolina as well, four as the offensive line coach and four as the tight ends coach.

Swinton also joins Fox from Denver, having spent the past two seasons as an assistant special teams coach. Garnes spent the past four seasons as the Broncos assistant secondary/safeties coach.

The Bears have now hired two of their three coordinators -- Fangio and special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers -- but are still in the search for an offensive coordinator.
