Bears aim to have at least 5 kickers at rookie minicamp

When Chicago Bears rookies report to rookie minicamp on Friday, the one area of need that will draw attention is, what else, kicker.

The Bears, who have four kickers on their roster, will make kicker an area of emphasis at rookie minicamp, bringing in as many as five rookies to compete.

John Baron II, who signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent, is among the rookie kickers that will be in attendance. That pool also includes Purdue’s Spencer Evans, Minnesota’s Emmit Carpenter, Minnesota State-Mankato’s Casey Bednarski and McNeese State’s Alex Kjellsten.

General manager Ryan Pace is exploring all routes when it comes to finding an answer to the Bears’ kicking woes. That includes taking a look at what these rookie kickers have to offer.

“We’re going to do whatever we can to get that situation right,” Pace said on Saturday when discussing the elephant in the room that is the kicker situation.

The Bears currently have four kickers under contract in Chris Blewitt, Redford Jones, Elliott Fry and John Baron II.

Perhaps Pace can find a hidden gem among these rookies. Or perhaps it’ll be the same ol’ story.

The Bears will host their rookie minicamp Friday, May 3-5.
