The Bears signed kicker Kai Forbath to their practice squad, a source said Friday afternoon.

The veteran is not expected to be a threat to Cairo Santos, who is 7-for-9 this season — including the Bears’ game-winner Thursday night — and is firmly entrenched as the team’s starter.

Eddy Pineiro continues to rehab his groin injury, but has been on injured reserve all season. Reporters didn’t see Pineiro try a single kick during the Bears’ summer camp practices.

Forbath, then, becomes insurance in case of a Santos injury or illness — be that coronavirus-related or not.

The Bears worked the UCLA alum out earlier in the week at Halas Hall. He was a perfect 10-for-10 in three games with the Cowboys last year, and made his only try in one game with the Patriots. In eight years with six teams, the 33-year-old is 131-for-151 on field goals and 183-for-195 on extra points.

To make room, the Bears put linebacker Devante Bond on practice squad injured reserve. He hurt his quad Thursday night.
