Bear discovered napping on closet shelf

A black bear that became locked inside a Montana residence made itself at home and took a nap on a shelf in a closet after ripping the room apart.

Deputies from the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Butler Creek resident’s call around 5:45 Friday morning and discovered the bear had opened the door to the mudroom and “somehow managed to deadbolt the door from the inside,” the sheriff’s office reported on Facebook.

“When deputies knocked on the window, the bear was not the least bit impressed,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “He slowly stretched, yawned and, unamused, looked toward the door. Eventually, deputies were able to unlock the door in hopes he would hop down and leave. However, their attempts were only met with more big bear yawns.”

Officials from the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks arrived and tranquilized the bear so it could be relocated.

“The homeowners were glad he was removed in good health, but won’t soon forget when this intruder came looking for the bear necessities!” the sheriff’s office wrote, adding a reminder to make sure you lock your doors.
