Beaming Prince Louis shows off new bike after first day at nursery before turning 3

Prince Louis shows off his new bike in a grogeous photo released to mark his third birthday today.

The young royal beamed proudly as he clutched the handlebars of his bright-red balance bike on Wednesday.

The photo was taken by the Duchess of Cambridge after Louis dressed up smart for his first day at pre-school.

He is following in the footsteps of older sister Charlotte, five, by attending Willcocks Nursery School.

The nursery, which costs £14,000 a year to attend full-time, is located just a stones throw from Kensington Palace.

A palace spokeswoman said the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were "delighted" to share the new snap ahead of their son's birthday.

Kate, 39, is a keen amateur photographer and regularly releases photos of her family and children.

He had been widely expected to begin preschool in January this year.

However, the countrywide lockdown is believed to have delayed his attendance.

Kate and William, 38, spent their Christmas break at their Norfolk home Anmer Hall as usual but the lockdown stopped them returning to London until last month.

George, now seven, was two and a half when he began attending Westacre Montessori School in Norfolk.

Charlotte was a similar age when she started at Willcocks Nursery School.

The London School, founded in 1964, costs around £14,000 a year to attend full-time.

Louis, Charlotte and George are fifth, fourth and third in line to the throne.

Royal fans will have to wait over a year until the trio attend the same school together.

George and Charlotte are currently studying at Thomas's Battersea school in south-west London.

Louis is likely to enrol there in September 2022 following his fourth birthday.
