Beagle creates carnage in kitchen trying to find herself a snack

A ‘smart and greedy’ beagle caused chaos in the family kitchen as she attempted to seek out a snack.

The hungry dog sussed out some mince had been placed in the microwave and managed to pull it off the counter while trying to open the door.

Christie Ryder, 46, from Mold came home from the school run to the carnage. shocked to find the smashed appliance on the floor.

The meat was being defrosted for that night's dinner but the four-year-old beagle had been successful in getting to it first.

Christie says Betsy can easily jump on the kitchen counters if she knows there is food available, but due to the positioning of the microwave, it looks like Betsy smelt the mince, stood up on her hind legs and pulled the door open and down to the floor.

Along with it also tumbled down a cup of tea and a milk bottle which spilled everywhere.

The other two dogs in the house, Tallulah the Maltese and Jude the Jack Russell, tried not to get too involved.

Christie said: “Luckily it didn’t hit her on the head. My little Jack Russell, Jude, follows her and he doesn’t start any trouble himself, but when I walked in Jude was like ‘nope, nothing to do with me’ and he cleared out of the way.

“Betsy had that look of guilt but then moments later, she had no cares – she was happy she had a pound of mince.”

Until now, the microwave was a safe space for Christie to put things. Christie, who is currently studying for a postgraduate degree, posted the incident to a beagle Facebook page so everyone could relate and laugh about it together.

One user commented, “This is next level beagling” while another said, “For us beagle owners, instead of the ‘wow’ button we should have an ‘omfg’ just for us.”

She said: “None of the dogs were injured so it could have been worse. I thought my house was pretty beagle-proof but turns out it’s not.”

Betsy has found her ways to keep Christie on her toes, and likes to wander off and escape out of the garden – so much so, she is well known in their village.

Christie will have people texting her saying they have found Betsy on the next road, or she has escaped into the community centre.

Christie said: “She can open my bedroom window and escape that way. One time she ran across the road into the community centre and jumped on the stage to watch the Zumba class.

“Luckily I realised and I ran out and the teacher said, ‘Christie, are you missing a beagle?’”

When the family got Betsy last year, they soon realised the clever dog can open windows, doors, drawers and jump fences, so nothing is ever secure. Christie has lost count of all the times Betsy has managed to get out or cause chaos.

She said: “One time during lockdown I got home and she’d been into the drawer with all the pasta and tins – I thought ‘that’s a commodity right now, you can’t be taking the pasta’. Now there’s child locks on the door.”

But despite Betsy’s curious personality, Christie says she is an absolute delight who is good with people, kids and other dogs. She does her best to keep her house ‘beagle-proof’ but has no doubt she will think of something else to do.

She said: “I joke about her escaping, but we’re lucky she’s not been stolen or hit by a car. That does worry me so obviously I try my best. I’m sure she’ll come up with something new soon because she’s smart and greedy.

“I am biased but she’s very pretty, that’s how she gets away with it. She’s very confident and dainty, when she’s not shoving microwaves off the side obviously. I’ve had that microwave for 14 years but it definitely had more life in it.”

Now that one is in the tip and Christie is looking for more ways to ‘beagle-proof’ her house and garden.
