Beachgoers bask in bank holiday sunshine as temperatures hit 22 C

Thousands of people headed to the beach today to enjoy their bank holiday Monday as Merseyside basked in glorious weather.

According to the Met Office, temperatures hit highs of 24 degrees in some parts of the country but here on Merseyside temperatures reached 22 degrees.

Thankfully the good weather is here to stay for a few days, with the mercury predicted to rise to 25 C this week in Liverpool, according to the Met Office.

Today families enjoyed a rare Monday off in the sunshine - and with foreign holidays put on hold for many people this year, our region's coastline provided the perfect alternative.

ECHO photographers have captured wonderful pictures of people enjoying the sunshine on both sides of the Mersey.

Hundreds of people were spotted sunbathing in New Brighton, Wirral, and plenty more were snapped catching rays on Ainsdale Beach.

Photos show that many braved a swim in the sea while others enjoyed ice creams and some family time on the beach.

Elsewhere cars were spotted queuing to get to Formby beach and car parks were packed surrounding Crosby beach and marina.

May has been the fourth wettest on record for the UK, and the wettest ever for Wales.

But thankfully we were given some sun on this May Bank Holiday.
