Beachgoer braces for giant waves on rock before it hits and sends him into the ocean

This is the terrifying moment a beachgoer clambering onto rocks is knocked into the sea by a giant wave.

Dramatic footage taken at Bonny Doon beach in Santa Cruz, California, shows the man walking on the rock when a monstrous wave comes crashing on it at a strong force.

He stands in a squat position and braces for the wave but the impact is so strong it sends him into the water.

He's swept across the rocky surface and eventually fell several metres down the sea.

According to KSBW, the man was rescued by Cal Fire and California State Parks rangers and escaped with minor injuries.

Officials said the man's encounter should serve as a reminder to the public of how quickly danger can happen when it comes to the ocean.

The huge wall of wave came as part of a Pacific Ocean storm.

The National Weather Service predicted waves as tall as two-storey buildings to hit the Northern Californian coastline this week.

West and northwest-facing beaches will be hit hardest with monstrous waves measuring up to 25 feet.
