Beaches near Edinburgh for the ultimate balmy bank holiday weekend staycation

Edinburgh will heat up as temperatures are set to rise higher than Venice and locals will be wanting to flock to the nearest beaches to soak up the sun.

Just in time for the weekend, and a bank holiday for some, Saturday will see temperatures up to 20 degrees celsius and 17 on Sunday.

After having such a freezing cold May, this heatwave will be very much welcomed and a good opportunity to get to the beach.

As many people have missed out on holidays and choosing staycations rather than trip abroad, we’ve gathered a list of the best beaches near Edinburgh to give you that holiday feeling, no passport or PRC test needed.

Silverknowes

Silverknowes, between Leith and Queensferry is a mix of sand and pebbles, a gold course and views out to Firth of Forth.

In the distance you can see Cramond Island and the village is a good stretch of the legs at 3 miles away and you can steadily walk along the promenade, basking in the sun until you get to a little humble cafe in Cramond.

Cramond Beach

Popular with local, Cramond offers a stretch of sand, perfect for a dog walk.

Just at the end of the prom, you can dine out al-fresco at the Cramond Inn and look out over Cramond Island, just like looking out on an exotic island.

Tyninghame Beach

Out in Dunbar in East Lothian, you can find this hidden gem of a beach that might not be as popular as Portobello which saw hundreds of Edinburgh locals flood to over lockdown last year.

This means you can enjoy the sandy beach without feeling over crowded and take in the sunshine this weekend.

This long beach looks out at Bass Rock and the pine forest to the side offers a scandinavian feel.

Seacliff Beach

Just half an hour from the city, Seacliff Beach in North Berwick is often known as “East Lothian’s hidden gem ” as it is so secluded.

Popular with water sport fans, this golden, unspoilt beach offers scenic castle ruins and views of the Bass rock that appears right opposite the beach.

You can also take a short walk down to the tiny harbour, carved out of sandstone and in fact it is said to be one of the smallest harbour in the UK, only making room for three small boats.

Just like you would on holiday, this offers brilliant opportunities for kids to explore ancient ruins and a run about on the sand.

Yellowcraig Beach

A large strip of sand on the east coast isn’t that far off from what you’d see the mediterranean.

Although surrounded by grasslands and sand dunes, the beach looks out to the Frida Islands, most famously known as the inspiration for Treasure Island by Louis Stevenson.

You can also find a pirate themed adventure park nearby which is perfect for the kids while you sit back, relax and top the tan up.
